The Benzie County Marine Patrol

enforces Michigan boating laws summarized as follows

SLOW - NO WAKE speed must be maintained within 100 feet of the shoreline, any watercraft, pier, person, raft, swimming area and swimmers.

SLOW - NO WAKE means a very slow speed whereby the wake or wash created by the vessel is minimal.

No person may operate a personal watercraft where the water depth is less than 2 feet except with NO WAKE.

The owner of any vessel is personally responsible for any damage to life or property resulting from a wake or swell created by negligent operation.

There are jetski, waterski and large craft lakes nearby.

If you have a water safety complaint you can call The Benzie County Sheriff's office at (231) 882-0060 ext 350.  Please leave a message and include a brief description of the complaint as well as the boat registration number as well as your own name and telephone number.

FYI, boats of 16' and longer of any design must have a boat registration number.

Boats of less than 16' in length do not need a registration number unless the boat has ANY kind of a motor.

Make sure that all life preservers/cushions have a legible Coast Guard Approval insignia.
